Content Filter & Internet Content Filtering

Getting It Right with iGuard and iPrism Internet Content Filtering

The effectiveness of a content filter depends on the accuracy of its filtering method, the way that page content is identified. iPrism content filter simplifies Internet content filtering for any sized network, leveraging the unparalleled accuracy of the iGuard content filter database with simple configuration which can be adapted for multiple user types.

Internet content filtering software compares every Internet request, like opening a website, to a database of sites. The sites in the content filter database are usually classified in two main groups, offensive and safe, and any requests that attempt to go to an offensive site are blocked. A content filter classifies sites with methods like keyword scanning, image recognition, or human review.

With keyword internet content filtering, context is often ignored or misidentified, which limits the effectiveness of the content filter, and can also misidentify sites that are light on keywords, like porn or high-bandwidth sites. Image recognition technology may not be mature enough to depend on. Human review is the most effective method but it introduces a new weakness to Internet content filtering — bias — because what one reviewer defines as offensive may be safe to another.

iPrism Internet content filtering leverages the accuracy of human review by accurately identifying the content and context of a site, but leaves control over defining what sites to block to your administrator. The iGuard content filter database has eight main categories and 63 subcategories to identify site content, such as Art/Culture, Finance, Shopping, Questionable, and High Bandwidth. The number of different categories grants exceptionally fine control over Internet content filtering. Every single page in the iGuard content filter database is human-reviewed, so context, images, and text are always considered and the page is always accurately classified.

The iPrism content filter provides other tools for more flexibility in the way you configure filtering:
  • Category-based Internet content filtering, blocking types of content, not specific URLs or keywords and making a content filter much easier to configure and without requiring updates as new sites go online since the iGuard database category is automatically updated.
  • User profiles which set categories and time ranges for monitoring or blocking access. Multiple content filter profiles allow different employee types to have appropriate access.
  • Custom content filter for file types, media on pages, and other custom Internet content filtering rules.
  • LDAP integration so that user profiles can work with the groups in an existing LDAP directory server.
  • URL-based Internet content filtering, which means Internet content filtering applies to page individually, not the site, domain, or IP address as a whole. Even if one page on a site is blocked, the other pages can still be allowed.
